The M-SAM Block-III program is overseen by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and represents an evolutionary performance upgrade following the original M-SAM (Cheongung) and M-SAM Block-II (Cheongung-II) systems. On December 11, LIG Nex1 disclosed that it had signed a system development prototype contract worth approximately KRW 216.6 billion (about USD 160 million) for the M-SAM Block-III, also known as Cheongung-III. Under the contract, the company will lead system integration and develop key prototypes—including command, control, and engagement operation centers—through 2030.
The M-SAM Block-III program is overseen by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and represents an evolutionary performance upgrade following the original M-SAM (Cheongung) and M-SAM Block-II (Cheongung-II) systems. The goal is to domestically develop a fully matured medium-range air defense system with substantially enhanced interception performance and engagement capability.
Once operational, M-SAM Block-III is expected to significantly strengthen lower-tier terminal-phase interception capabilities within the KAMD framework. Together with Cheongung-II, L-SAM, and L-SAM-II, the new system will form a fully indigenous, multi-layered missile defense network within the atmosphere, reinforcing South Korea’s national missile defense posture.
The program involves broad participation from domestic defense firms and is anticipated to generate meaningful economic and industrial spillover effects, while also enhancing South Korea’s competitiveness in the global air defense export market.
LIG Nex1 stated that it will consolidate its accumulated experience in missile system development, mass production, and exports to ensure the successful development of M-SAM Block-III. Defense analysts note that the program places the evolution of South Korea’s indigenous missile defense capabilities firmly on track, underscoring the growing maturity of the country’s defense science and technology base.
