ROK Marine Corps High-Speed Combat Boat “Cheongsaechi” On December 11, the ROKMC and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) held a launching ceremony at Kangnam Shipbuilding in Saha District, Busan, for the service’s new High-Speed Combat Boat (HCB-001), named 'Cheongsaechi(Striped marlin)' .

The Cheongsaechi represents a significant leap from the Marine Corps’ aging rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), offering far greater speed, protection, and firepower. The 18-meter-class craft is equipped with a Remote-Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) and other mission systems. Powered by a domestically developed waterjet propulsion system, the vessel can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h even in shallow waters, ensuring rapid maneuverability for amphibious and coastal operations.

Key sections of the craft are reinforced with armor plating to improve survivability for crew and embarked Marines.

Designed and built entirely in Korea, the Cheongsaechi entered construction after the ROKMC signed a contract with Kangnam Corporation in July 2023. Work began in May 2024, followed by the keel-laying ceremony in August, culminating in today’s launch.

The vessel will undergo a full test and evaluation period before being delivered to the Marine Corps in December 2025, after which it will enter an operational deployment phase.

The 18-meter-class craft is equipped with a Remote-Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) and other mission systems. 

Its name, Cheongsaechi—the Korean term for the swift and powerful blue marlin—symbolizes the boat’s mission: rapid movement to maritime operational areas and immediate engagement in combat.

Marine Corps Commandant Lt. Gen. Joo Il-seok stated, “The High-Speed Combat Boat is the first naval vessel ever inducted by the Marine Corps and represents a fusion of Korea’s shipbuilding expertise and advanced defense technologies. Once deployed, it will significantly strengthen the Marine Corps’ ability to rapidly project reinforcement forces and protect our nation and our people.”
