Hyundai Rotem’s K600 Combat Engineer Vehicle The K600 is a specialized armored engineer vehicle designed to clear mines, rubble, and battlefield obstacles to secure mobility corridors for friendly forces. Equipped with a front-mounted mine plow, the platform can dig into and overturn soil to expose buried mines, while a magnetic mine neutralization system generates a strong electromagnetic field to trigger magnetically fused mines. Its excavator arm, mounted on the upper hull, can be fitted with a rock breaker for obstacle removal or configured as a crane capable of lifting heavy objects.
The newly contracted second production batch will be deployed for the first time to frontline infantry divisions and the Marine Corps. The CEV’s introduction is expected to significantly strengthen operations in and around the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), improving both mission effectiveness and troop safety. Unlike the first production batch, which was primarily assigned to armored and mechanized units, the second batch will be distributed more widely across front and rear-area units.
For the ROK Marine Corps, acquisition of the K600 is expected to dramatically enhance beach assault capabilities by enabling rapid and safe breaching of coastal minefields. The ability to independently secure mobility corridors in hazardous areas will also enhance joint operations with the ROK Army and improve overall combined-arms maneuver capability.
Hyundai Rotem has incorporated several performance upgrades based on operational feedback from the ROK Army. Improvements include an expanded movement range for the commander’s seat, reduced vibration levels in the right rear-view mirror during maneuvering, noise reduction in certain subsystems, and overall enhancements to operational safety and crew comfort.
The K600 program traces back to a ROK military requirement defined in 2006, followed by approximately five years of system development beginning in 2014. After completing the first mass-production phase from 2019 to 2023, Hyundai Rotem has continued to refine and upgrade the vehicle as part of an ongoing capability enhancement initiative across its armored vehicle lineup.
A Hyundai Rotem spokesperson stated, “As the importance of armored forces increases globally, so does the need for combat engineer vehicles that maximize the effectiveness of main battle tanks. We will continue incorporating military feedback to improve production quality and contribute to strengthening national defense.”
